Invermay Traffic

THE Invermay Traffic Investigation Report is due to be completed by the end of 2017 (The Examiner, November 14).

It would seem the intersection of Lindsay and Goderich Streets which is adjacent to Charles Street Bridge is the worst performing intersection in Launceston, this is before any further development such as the Silo's complex and planned expansion in the area abounding Bunnings.

Will a similar study be initiated at the Tamar Bridge end of Lindsay Street? Not according to the City of Launceston Council at its meeting on November 21.

They intend to whack some traffic lights up and then hope that the area can cope with the 30,000-plus vehicle movements a day, this is before the UTAS campus is built, which will add another 15,000-plus.

Is the campus considered a poor cousin to an hotel development, it does seem that some intersections are more equal than others.

  1. If Utas campus gets built at Inveresk, and it brings 16,000 students in, plus staff, ie students plus staff, whatever the number of vehicles that adds to the current bottlneck/gridlock at the two bridges, the actual number of vehicle movements will be double the number of vehicles that will be added to the area, because each vehicle that arrives, has to also leave, ie. two movements per vehicle per visit to the area. So Ron, have you calculated the extra 15,000 on 7500 extra vehicles or just on the total numbers of extra vehicles? And what if these vehicles don't manage to find parking first time round? If they don't and they have to drive around bit to find a parking spot, that will add a few more movements to the chaos. No amount of studies will solve the problem of traffic and parking in the area, especially if it keeps on getting worse. Previous studies have already shown that the traffic in the area is already at saturation levels.

  2. Misunderstanding here I suspect. The entire rationale of the Councii is to do whatever it takes to bring more money into the area. Let the Mowbray swimming centre collapse - benefits include spending maintenance monies on something else (salaries, trips overseas etc) PLUS bring in $27 million new dollars to build a new pool. The university caper is the same...get new money in and get benefits for anyone within 'coo-ee' who qualifies. So don't complain about traffic, pollution, social problems etc. All of these represent 'opportunity' to suck in more bux. Now you know why the Council doesn't care about your problems...to them those problems are opportunities to benefit. Feel better now?
